New London Chamber Ensemble and Michael DussekEach player in the ensemble is a virtuoso, but as a group they seem to have effortlessly acquired those essential chamber music skills of “give and take” which would grace a long-established string quartet.’ (the late Guy Woolfenden).

2020 sees the 20th anniversary of the New London Chamber Ensemble. A wind quintet with a difference, the NLCE has challenged traditional ideas of chamber music with their innovative programmes. Concert appearances have taken the NLCE all over the world. Highlights include northern Sweden, the Banff Festival in Canada, the Trasimeno Festival (Perugia), the Leeds International Concert Season, premières at the Cheltenham Festival in 2011 and 2014 and concerts at Wigmore Hall and King’s Place, London.

The NLCE’s discography includes Music for Wind and Piano by Carl Nielsen (Meridian, 2009), voted CD of the year by MusicWeb International, including the Wind Quintet (1922) that they play tonight. Their programme opens with the Piano and Wind Quintet by Beethoven, allegedly inspired by Mozart’s masterpiece with the same scoring and in the same key, which is tonight’s finale. In these two works the NLCE is joined by pianist Michael Dussek, ‘an accompanist with all the skill and mastery of a confident soloist, but with the intelligence to match his playing to his partners’ without imposing or losing his own personality.’ (Classical Music Magazine). A member of three chamber ensembles, the Dussek Piano Trio, Endymion and Primavera, tonight Michael also joins the NLCE flautist Robert Manasse in a performance of Poulenc’s delightful Flute Sonata.
